Round 17

Motegi, Japan

Sunday, 28 September 2025

Francesco Bagnaia will be keen to become the first Italian motorcycle racer to win back-to-back Japanese MotoGP titles since Loris Capirossi won the 2005, 2006 and 2007 races.

Most recent race

The Ducati Lenovo Team rider failed to secure a podium spot at the San Marino and the Rimini Riviera MotoGP on 14 September, the most recent event on the 2025 MotoGPcalendar.

Bagnaia started on the eighth grid, but unfortunately, he was forced to retire after being involved in an accident and he left his native, Italy, without a single point.

MotoGP title ambitions

The VR46 Riders Academy product remains third in the 2025 MotoGP Riders' standings, having collected 237 points from 16 races.

Bagnaia is 275 points behind leader Marc Marquez of Ducati and 93 points behind second-placed Alex Marquez of Ducati.

Why Francesco Bagnaia could win the 2025 Japanese MotoGP

The 28-year-old tends to bring his A game whenever he competes in the Japanese MotoGP, having won last season's race after finishing second in the 2023 edition.

Bagnaia, who also won the 2018 Japanese Moto2, is one of the hot favourites to win this weekend's race and edge closer to Alex Marquez in the battle for the top two spots.

What did he say?

“I was trying to follow Diggia (Fabio Di Giannantonio), then the crash happened," Bagnaia said after being forced to retire due to an accident at the 2025 San Marino and the Rimini Riviera MotoGP.

"We need to carefully analyse what happened, especially ahead of tomorrow’s test, which will be extremely important to help us find the right direction. Of course, there’s disappointment about the crash.

"But we’ll keep working to solve these issues, which I’ve been carrying for several races now, and to approach the long Asian stretch in the best way possible.”
